An Assistive Technology Assessment
is completed by a team and :
-
is on-going
-
is conducted by a
multidisciplinary team
-
involves input from persons
familiar with the student
-
includes trial use of
technology
Assistive technology assessment is
an ongoing team process. If the student's IEP team has met and determined
that an ESE students may benefit from some type of assistive technology, the
school completes the AT Request form Request
for Assistive Technology Services/Screening form and sends it to the AT office along with a copy of the
student's IEP. Upon receipt of the referral packet, an assistive
technology specialist contacts the school to obtain preliminary information
regarding the referred student, arranges a date and time to observe the student
in the school environment, and schedules a meeting at the school with the
student's team.
The goal of this meeting is to
identify the student's strengths and weaknesses and to target areas where AT
will be implemented for a trial period. The AT specialist will conduct the
meeting using a team-decision making process, develop an action plan, and
schedule a follow-up meeting. The AT specialist will assist in the
implementation of the action plan by providing AT devices/equipment and
training. The AT specialist will provide a written action plan to all team
members. At the end of the trial period, a written report will be provided
summarizing the assessment and making recommendations. In addition, the AT
specialist assists in acquiring specific devices/equipment determined necessary
for the student.
